PORTFOLIO
When I decided to switch careers from television production to interior design, I knew I already had a talent for aesthetics and could execute a vision. But it was a messy process. I was fairly clueless about a professional order of operations; I just knew it existed and that I needed to learn it. But with three very young kiddos and a husband who consistently traveled and was building his own company, I knew I couldn’t commit to the schedule of a brick and mortar school.
So after a massive amount of research, I chose to enroll with The Interior Design Institute. Based in San Francisco and Sydney, Australia, they offered a comprehensive course completely online and self-paced. Perfect for this mama.
VALENTINE COTTAGE
Like a good TV show with an ongoing plot, the progressive course units at IDI generally centered around one massive fictional renovation: a wife and mother of two children who’s frustrated by various aspects of the ground floor of her home. It needed a complete redesign, from plumbing and electrical to traffic flow, all the way to the perfect pillows and pencil holder in the study.
Without further ado, the work I created within the school assignments’ parameters for Mrs. Catherine Valentine’s cottage…
TERRACE HAVEN
Another project for The Interior Design Institute was to take on an actual client and redesign a single space in their home. My husband became my client, and our frustrating, un-done basement became the project. I had a leg up since I already knew his lifestyle and tastes, but it was the most fun to create a design that screams of who he is and to see him get pumped over wallpaper. His tastes and mine are fairly different, but I was able to create a space that truly feels like him and that flows with the rest of our home.
